Morocco’s Blueberry Revolution: Surging to the Top as UAE’s Leading Exporter.

In a riveting turn of events, Morocco has emerged triumphant, dethroning South Africa to seize the coveted title of the United Arab Emirates’ premier blueberry supplier for the 2022/23 marketing year. This remarkable transformation in Morocco’s blueberry export industry has sent shockwaves through the global fruit market.

Just a mere two years ago, in the 2020/21 marketing year, Morocco’s blueberry exports to the UAE were a modest 211 tonnes. However, fast forward to 2022/23, and the North African nation has pulled off an astonishing feat – shipping a staggering 982 tonnes valued at an impressive US$6.3 million. This meteoric rise in blueberry exports has firmly established Morocco as a dominant force in the global fruit trade.

The UAE, renowned for its bustling international trade scene, sources blueberries from a multitude of countries, including the Netherlands, Peru, and 22 others during the 2022/23 marketing year. Not too long ago, the Netherlands, the United States, and Spain reigned as the primary blueberry suppliers to the UAE. South Africa later took the lead, accounting for over one-third of total blueberry imports. However, Morocco’s relentless efforts in expanding its market share have redefined the dynamics of this industry.

A mere five years ago, Morocco’s contribution to blueberry imports in the UAE stood at a mere 2.6%. This year, the North African nation’s share skyrocketed to an impressive 36%, reaching a staggering 80% during the months of February to May. Morocco primarily exports blueberries to the UAE from January to June, while South African blueberries dominate the market from July to December. This harmonious collaboration ensures a year-round supply of blueberries to meet the UAE’s burgeoning demand.

One pivotal factor propelling Morocco’s ascent to success is the influx of foreign investments into the country’s burgeoning berry industry. This unwavering support has enabled Morocco to emerge as a major exporter of blueberries, pitting it against traditional competitors such as Spain, France, and Italy in the lucrative European Union market.

Morocco’s rapid rise in the global blueberry market mirrors not only its unwavering commitment to quality but also its remarkable ability to adapt to shifting trade dynamics. As the UAE continues to serve as a vital hub for international trade, Morocco’s newfound prominence as the leading blueberry exporter underscores its resilience and growing influence in the realm of fruit exports.

Morocco’s astounding journey from a minor player to the top blueberry exporter to the UAE in just two short years is a testament to the nation’s unwavering determination and adaptability in the face of evolving market conditions. With its sights firmly set on conquering the European Union market, Morocco’s expanding berry industry serves as a shining example of the incredible power of strategic investments and collaboration in the global fruit trade. Morocco’s blueberry boom is a captivating story of triumph and tenacity that will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on the world of fruit exports.
