Namibia’s seed production industry is set to receive a boost as the Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB) and the University of Namibia (UNAM) team up to produce high-quality seed varieties that are adaptable to the country’s soil and climatic conditions with increased yield potential.
The collaboration has already yielded positive results, with the two institutions embarking on a trial research project in various production zones across the country. However, to further enhance the project’s implementation, NAB/UNAM has partnered with key seed companies in Zambia to offer training and share best agricultural practices with Namibian seed researchers.
As part of the collaboration, a delegation of agricultural experts from NAB/UNAM is currently undergoing training in seed breeding, production, storage, and processing of high-quality seed varieties for White Maize, Wheat, and Soya beans in Lusaka, Zambia. The training will also incorporate field trial observations for practical learning.
Zambia, as a host to some of the most established quality seed suppliers in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), is a valuable partner in the collaboration. The training collaboration with Zambian seed companies will help bridge the gap in the seed production industry in Namibia and provide a platform for exchanging ideas and knowledge sharing.
The NAB/UNAM Seed Research Project collaboration with Zambia Seed Companies is a step closer to addressing the challenges facing the seed production industry in Namibia. The project’s success will not only benefit the seed industry but will also contribute to enhancing food security and promote sustainable agriculture in the region.
